Spiritual Regulations for the Great Fast

Although our Church traditionally prescribed abstention from meat and dairy products in days gone by for the entire duration of the Great Fast, the following are the minimal Lenten regulations today:  Abstinence from meat and all dairy products on the First Day of the Great Fast and on Good Friday.  Abstinence from meat only on all Fridays of the Great Fast as well as Holy Saturday.  It is also traditional to abstain from meat on Wednesdays during the Great Fast.  Reception of the Holy Mysteries of Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist during the period from the onset of Great Fast to the Wednesday before Ascension Thursday. The Fasting and Abstinence regulations are not binding on persons 60 or older, the very poor, sick, nursing or pregnant women, children below the age of 14, and those who engage in physically very hard labor. However, all are urged, if able to do so, to observe the fasting and abstinence regulations.  All the faithful are urged to attend the Lenten services such as Lenten Vespers, the Presanctified Liturgy and the Commemoration of the Deceased (Sorokousty).  Such good deeds as almsgiving, visitation of the sick, Bible reading and praying for vocations to the priesthood and religious life are most earnestly recommended to all the Faithful.

Great Fast Liturgical Guidelines

The weekdays of the Great Fast are aliturgical meaning no Divine Liturgy, even for funerals, should be celebrated except for the Feast of the Annunciation. On Wednesdays and Fridays of the Great Fast, the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts is to be celebrated. Typika may be used the other days. The Divine Liturgy of St. Basil the Great is to be celebrated for Sunday Liturgies during this time. 

Духовні правила на Великий Піст

Хоч наша Церква традиційно приписує утримання від споживання м’яса і молочних страв у всі дні Великого Посту, подаємо мінімальні Великопосні правила на сьогодні:  Утримання від вживання м’яса та молочних страв в перший день Великого Посту, та в Страсну П’ятницю. Утримання від вживання м’яса у всі п’ятниці Великого Посту як і на Страсну Суботу.  Традиційно утримуються від вживання м’яса ще й по середах Великого Посту.  Таїнство сповіді з Пресвятою Євхаристією приймається в період від початку Великого Посту до середи перед святом Вознесіння Господнього.  Піст та правила утримання не зобов’язують людей старше 60-ти років, дуже немічних, жінок-годувальниць і вагітних, дітей до 14 років і тих, хто важко працює фізично.  Однак, всіх закликається, якщо це можливо, дотримуватися посту і обмежуючих правил.  Усіх вірних закликається брати участь у Великопосних богослуженнях, таких як великопосна  Вечірня, Літургія Напередосвячених Дарів та Сорокоусти.  Щиро заохочуємо всіх вірних до таких добрих діл як милостиня, відвідання хворих, Біблійні читання та молитви за покликання до священства та релігійного життя.

Літургійні вказівки Великого Посту

Будні Великого посту є нелітургійними днями, тобто, Служба Божа не правиться навіть на похороні, за виключенням празника Благовіщення.  У середи та п’ятниці Великого Посту відправляється Літургія Напередосвячених Дарів. У другі дні можна відправляти Типик. Впродовж цього часу в неділі відправляється Літургія св. Василія Великого.

Під час Страсного Тижня Літургія Напередосвячених Дарів відправляється в понеділок, вівторок та середу. Ввечері Страсного Четверга відправляється Вечірня з Божественною Літургією св. Василія Великого.  Ввечері Страсної Суботи відправляється Вечірня з Божественною Літургією св. Василія Великого.

Слава Отцю і Сину і Святому Духові; 

Кондак Посний голос 4:  Нині час для діяння явився,* при дверях суд,* востаньмо, отже, постячися,* принесім сльози благання з милостинями, взиваючи:*  Ми согрішили більше піску морського,* але ослаби, Творче всіх, щоб ми прийняли нетлінні вінці.

І нині і повсякчас і на віки вічні.  Амінь.

Богородичний голос 4:  Йоаким i Анна народженням Твоїм, Пречиста,* з неслави бездітности, Адам же і Єва від тління смерти визволилися.* 3вільнений від вини за гріхи, Твій народ святкує, взиваючи:* Неплідна народжує Богородицю* і кормительку Життя нашого.

Прокімен голос 5:  Ти Господи, захорониш нас і збережеш нас від роду цього і повік. (Пс. 11,8)

Cmux: Спаси мене, Господи, бо не стало праведного. (Пс 11,2)

Алилуя воскресний:  Вислухає тебе Господь у день печалі, захистить тебе ім'я Бога Якова. (Пс. 20,2)

Стих: Господи, спаси царя і вислухай нас, коли будемо взивати до Тебе. (Пс. 20,10) Алилуя, тричі.

Причасний: Хваліте Господа з небес, хваліте Його на висотах. (Пс 148,1) Алилуя, (тричі).

2nd Sunday Of The Great Fast

Tropar, resurrectional tone 2:  When You went down to death, O Life Immortal,* You struck Hades dead with the blazing light of Your divinity.*  When You raised the dead from the nether world, all the powers of heaven cried out:*  "O Giver of life, Christ our God, glory be to You!"

Glory be to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit; 

Kondak of the Great Fast:  The time for action is now revealed; the Judge is at the door.  Let us rise then and keep the fast, offering tears of contrition with alms and crying aloud:  Our sins are more numerous than the sands of the sea, but forgive us, O Maker of all, that we may receive incorruptible crowns.

Now and forever and ever.  Amen

Theotokon:  By your birth, O Immaculate One, Joachim and Anna were freed from the reproach of childlessness, and Adam and Eve from the corruption of death. And your people, redeemed from the guilt of their sins, celebrate as they cry out to you: "The barren one gives birth to the Mother of God and nourisher of our Life."

Prokimen Tone 5: You, O Lord, will guard us and will keep us from this generation and for ever. (11/12:8)

Verse: Save me O Lord, for there is no longer left a just man. (Ps. 11/12: 2)

Alleluia resurrectional: The Lord will hear you in the day of tribulation; the name of the God of Jacob will shield you.
